Last year, our NGO organized several beach cleanups along a 2-kilometer stretch of the coastline (famous as Rainbow beach). Over 50 volunteers joined hands to collect more than 500 kilograms of waste, including plastic bottles, fishing nets, and microplastics. Among the participants were local boys, experts and schoolchildren, who shared how they had begun noticing the harmful effects of waste on marine life.
One remarkable moment was discovering of human activities upstream can turn a clean beach into a ‘dumpsite like”.
Since the cleanups, Mbezi Beach residents have pledged to maintain a waste-free beach, and nearby businesses have started initiative to reduce plastic use. What began as one-day event has sparked a community-wide commitment to preserving the coastline for future generations.
TSDI believes that small actions lead to lasting changes.
